"Pricing [of iPhone] is an issue in some markets - in a fast-growing market such as India, for example, Apple has barely made a dent, owing to the fact that its phones cost around double that of many competitors", said Matthew Kendall, chief telecoms analyst at Economist Intelligence Unit.

Concerns about the company's sales in China and demand for its latest iPhone have mounted since then, highlighted by Apple's rare warning earlier this month about lower-than-expected revenue for the December quarter. Apple stock rose 5 percent in after-hours trading, according to data compiled by Yahoo Finance. Earlier, we reported that Apple replaced as much as 11 million batteries in 2018 alone, compared to 1-2 million cells the company normally replaces.

And the California-based company looks to build momentum for its Apple TV service, with deals to have it installed on television models coming out this year.

Apple's share price has dropped by around one third since October, amid investor concerns that buyer appetite for iPhones is weakening.

He continued: "We are as confident as ever in the fundamental strength of our business".

Is pricing holding back iPhone sales?

FQ1 earnings per share (EPS): $US4.18. The company posted revenue of $51.98 billion which was lower than the projected revenue of $52.67 billion.

Viewed from a certain angle, Apple's first-quarter earnings were pretty good.

With that, Apple could have a chance to earn more from mobile device sales internationally this year.

The culprits behind the declines were slowing iPhone sales and China's economic downturn. In the prior-year quarter, it had been well 61 billion dollars.

"When you look at foreign currencies and then particularly those markets that weakened over the previous year those (iPhone price) increases were obviously more", Cook told Reuters. That's the gateway through which customers access existing and future services from the company.

While Apple generated "strong operating cash flow" of 26.7 billion dollars during the December quarter, its operating expenses for the second quarter are forecast between 8.5 billion and 8.6 billion dollars. This figure represents a 5-percent decrease over the same quarter a year ago, with iPhone revenue down 15-percent and other products and services revenue up 19-percent. Without getting into detail, Cook suggested Apple will get further into the original video content business. IPads were up 17 percent against the year-ago quarter; Mac was up nine percent and Wearables/Home/Accessories were up by 33 percent. "Apple needs to play more heavily in this space both to generate new opportunities but also to defend its own device business". Profits slipped to $19.87 billion.
