US Democrats act to end government shutdown

Part of the problem in coming to a deal, Democrats say, is that Trump often changes his mind.

After the November congressional elections, Republicans have a 53-47 majority in the Senate and Democrats have a 235-199 margin in the House, with one seat undecided.

Trump stood behind him, nodding along.

But the new House speaker, veteran Democrat Nancy Pelosi, stood firm shortly before Thursday's vote, saying no funding for a border wall would be made available.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) brought out with her the first floor chart of the new session - a sign that pointed to Trump's campaign promise that Mexico would finance the wall.

Watters said Pelosi was in rare form Thursday and was upset because she was upstaged by President Trump's inaugural appearance in the White House Briefing Room with several members of border protection enforcement. Democrats now control 13 committees with subpoena power which can pose incredible legal peril for Donald Trump. We shouldn't be impeaching for a political reason, and we shouldn't avoid impeachment for a political reason.

Trump strode into the White House briefing room Thursday - the 13th day of the partial government shutdown -and declared that "without a wall you can not have border security". Republicans in the Senate have pledged to only vote on measures that have Donald Trump's support - and the president continues to demand his border wall funding.

Rep. Brad Sherman (D., Calif.) said impeachment would be in the national interest, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

"My goal is to get government reopened as fast as possible".

At another point Wednesday, Trump told Pelosi that, as a "good Catholic" she should support the wall because Vatican City has a wall, according to a congressional aide.

Trump and Democrats are at odds over funding for a border wall.

In addition, Democrats are eliminating a rarely used rule that allowed any lawmaker to file a motion to force a vote on ousting the speaker.

Trump, whose own bid for 2020 already is underway, faces potential challenges from the ranks of Senate Democrats under Chuck Schumer. "He does not want them to know how he's hurting them, so he keeps the subject on the wall".

It was a quiet afternoon at the White House toward the end of a four-day week.

Pelosi also took a shot a Trump, calling his proposal "a wall between reality and his constituents". "I look forward to welcoming you to the Congress". More likely, he's trying to make nice because of the looming threat of a torrent of investigations that puts his family in the crosshairs.

Rep. Ro Khanna of California and Rep. -elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY said they would vote against the rules changes - in the second vote Democrats will take in the majority after ostensibly electing Pelosi as the new speaker - because of the inclusion of a fiscal measure known as "pay as you go", or PAYGO.

But that could liberate her even more from her party.

Democrats have also highlighted their plan to move quickly to defend the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, and have set up rules for the new Congress to give Pelosi the authority to intervene in a federal court case challenging the constitutionality of Obamacare.

Tennessee Rep. Jim Cooper has represented the 5th District since 2003 and is a member of the Blue Dog coalition of moderate Democrats. "Why doesn't the Pelosi bill do that?" said White House counselor Kellyanne Conway. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, reiterated today that the Senate will only take up Government spending legislation that Trump supports.
