At its hardware event in NY on Tuesday, Google launched its 2018 flagship Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones.
Google has confirmed previous reports, affirming its new Pixel 3 and 3XL smartphones will only feature gesture-based navigation controls. Another new feature likely coming to the Pixel 1, 2, and 3 is Motion Auto Focus. Whether you bought your Pixel 3 through Verizon or through Google, you can still pick up these cases from Verizon.
Google's largest announcement would have been that the Google Pixel 3 XL would be joining the Apple iPhone X (s) in including the controversial notch at the top of the screen. The tablet works with the Android Camera App which makes the quality of the pictures just a little better. As well as the standard Just Black and Clearly White options, the Pixel 3 is available in Not Pink. For instance, the new Pixel phones support wireless charging. Google doesn't disclose its phone shipments, unlike Apple, which has sold about 388 million iPhones since the first Pixel came out in October 2016. The feature is set to arrive on the Pixel and Pixel 2 next month.
Now the Pixel 3 promises even better photos, but apart from an ugly notch on the XL model, it will look like any other smartphone to the casual observer - yet it has a price tag which puts it at the luxury end of the market.
The Pixel 3 has a 5.5-inch OLED display, while the Pixel 3 XL has a 6.3-inch OLED screen. One of the front-firing speakers also resides on the notch.
The US major may need to offer direct and indirect discounts and promotional offers to move the needle for its latest devices which offer only a marginal upgrade over last year's Pixel 2 devices, they added. This new feature makes low-light photographs brighter and clearer using machine learning. Notable features mentioned is the lack of a camera for "privacy reasons", and Ambient EQ.
Though Google has said that Lens Suggestions will be exclusive to Pixel 3 handsets, some form of this new experience can be expected for the old Pixel phones.
The Pixel 3 starts at £739 for the 64GB model, moving up to £839 for the 128GB version.
Google uses the phones to highlight what it considers to be best features of its Android operating system, while challenging Apple and Samsung with a device tailored for affluent consumers.
"Some of the stuff they are doing with software and artificial intelligence is certainly leading edge", he said.
