'Dozens' of Iranian military targets hit in Syria, claims Israel

Syrian activists reported Israeli airstrikes hitting targets near Damascus.

As part of the wide-scale attack, said to be the largest in decades and possibly since the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the IAF struck Quds Force intelligence centers, Quds Force logistical command centers, a Quds Force military center and a Quds Force logistical center in Al-Kiswah, as well as an Iranian military base north of Damascus.

Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra, reporting from Beirut, said that the move has created concerns in neighbouring Lebanon after Lebanese army said that the country's airspace was violated by Israeli fighter jets. No accidents or injury was reported. As of this writing, the extent of these air raids and whether they caused any casualties remain unclear.

However, the Israeli military stressed that despite Iran's attempts to cover up its involvement, it is clear that Quds Force Commander Qasem Soleimani signed off on the attack and that Iran responsible for it.

"The IDF won't enable the Iranian risk to ascertain itself in Syria".

Russian Federation is reported to have been informed in advance of the Israeli attack.

Why does Israel hit Iranian interests? Then on Tuesday, CNN reported that the Pentagon was concerned about alleged preparations for an Iranian strike.

"We are resistance factions and we are ready to target Americans in the region in case America hits Iran".

The air strike was accompanied by a campaign to whip up a war fever in Israel. Israel has been attacking Iranian targets in Syria for weeks, warning it won't accept a permanent Iranian presence in its neighboring country.

Liberman used the conference stage to expand on many issues including Israel's policy towards Syria: "We will not allow Iran to bring anti-aircraft warfare (to Syria) and close Israeli air space".

Israel was blamed for several recent deadly air attacks in Syria that killed Iranians.

Last month, an attack on Syria's T4 air base in Homs province killed seven Iranian military personnel.

Israel's military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus said Israel had retaliated for an attack on its outposts in the strategic Golan Heights plateau.

On Tuesday Israel took the unusual step of ordering authorities in the Golan to prepare civilian bomb shelters after identifying "irregular activity" by Iranian forces in Syria.

The Israeli armed forces spokesman mentioned the Iranian attack with approximately 20 projectiles or rockets had been transported from the Quds drive, an external arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guards. "We have no interest in conquering Syria".

Oil jumps to a fresh three and a half year high as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise.

The war in Yemen, widely seen as a proxy battle between Saudi Arabia and Iran, is another theater Tehran could exploit to inflict pain on its enemies.

It came as President Donald Trump said the United States would quit the Iran nuclear deal. It said four were intercepted by the Iron Dome rocket defense system, while others fell in Syrian territory. Iran has to be "held accountable for this", he ominously declared.

Oil in NY extended gains above $71 a barrel on speculation that "the conflict between Iran and Israel could eventually threaten supply across the Middle East", Takayuki Nogami, chief economist at state-backed Japan Oil, Gas & Metals National Corp., said by phone from Tokyo.
