Here are some of the cases linked to the Golden State Killer, whose crime spree struck terror in parts of California and became one of the most notorious unsolved crimes in U.S. history.

The FBI said it had a team gathering evidence at a Sacramento area home linked to DeAngelo.

Two hours before news broke of the arrest, Oswalt and all of McNamara's collaborators were together for the first time promoting the book with her family at an event outside her hometown of Chicago. Komas is a co-author of a book about the East Area Rapist case and webmaster of a site that details each of the crimes possibly linked to DeAngelo.

Harrington's brother, Bruce, helped bankroll a successful 2004 ballot initiative campaign to take DNA from all convicted felons and some arrestees.

The former California cop identified Wednesday as the Golden State Killer was a grouchy grandpa with a short fuse who once threatened "death" over a barking dog, his neighbors reportedly said.

To Oswalt, McNamara was "Marge Gunderson in Fargo, not Chilton in The Silence of the Lambs", referring to Frances McDormand's unceremonious small-town detective who caught a killer, versus the pompous sanitarium director (Anthony Heald) who was jealous of Federal Bureau of Investigation trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) for her ability to get information out of his prisoner, Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins).

"I had the creeps about this guy for a long time", Verdon told the newspaper.

Another neighbor, Natalia Bedes-Correnti, said DeAngelo appeared to be a "nice old grandpa" but he cursed loudly and often over misplaced auto keys and the like.

Then Wednesday morning, she received the confirmation that Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, of Citrus Heights, a community near Sacramento, was in custody, with authorities saying DNA evidence conclusively shows he is the Golden State Killer/East Area Rapist.

The suspected Golden State Killer became less prolific but deadlier after losing his job as a police officer.

The Golden State Killer, also known as the East Area Rapist or the Original Night Stalker, is connected to two double homicides and an attempted homicide case in Santa Barbara County.

Wardlow also said she never let the attack define her.

"Just looking at this 40 year old case that can be solved, it gives us hope", Lin said.

DeAngelo lived in this Citrus Heights, Calif., home, where neighbors say his constant irritability often boiled over into anger.

.

She said the "answer was always going to be in the DNA" and the connection came in the slayings of Brian and Katie Maggiore. "It was a scary time", she said.

District Attorney's spokeswoman Shelly Orio says a news conference will be held Wednesday afternoon in Sacramento to make "a major announcement".

"I have just been overjoyed, ecstatic. It's an emotional roller-coaster right now", Carson-Sandler, who now lives near Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

Orange County sheriff's investigator Larry Pool, who was assigned the case two decades ago, said detectives suspect DeAngelo was in Australia, where investigators have an unsolved serial killer case from the early to mid-1980s. A home in that community belonging to a former police officer was being searched Wednesday by FBI investigators and police from several agencies.

"I'm still kind of processing that they got him, you know?"
