Local shops celebrate Record Store Day

Beginning on Record Store Day, the folks at Friendly Records in Bristol have decided to make it "Record Store Weekend" with live performances from Snails, Alex Lipinski and Olive Haigh.

"We've sold a ton of rare records online that we normally wouldn't be able to sell in the store", Yoshitomi noted. Zia will have several deals and special items on Record Store Day, with some proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Clubs.

"It's a good thing, Record Store Day ... it gets people out shopping", Shaver said.

Kurtz and others from the meeting in Baltimore took Brown's idea and made it into a reality.

"There's kind of a clubhouse mentality to a record store", said McGlothin, a customer and former owner of Speakertree Records.

This Record Store Day, East Nashville's neighborhood record shop, The Groove, is teaming up with ACME Radio to provide live performances and food trucks throughout the day in the stores "backyard".

Everyone from Abba to Bob Dylan are celebrating RSD 2018 by issuing new vinyl while there are also re-releases from Arcade Fire, The Who, and AC/DC.

The annual event, launched in 2007, is a salute to brick-and-mortar music shops, and includes in-store performances, special sales and the release of an extensive selection of limited-edition and exclusive vinyl - often in the form of different colors, designs, boxed sets, rarities and live tracks.

Michael Pawlicki, the owner of The Ghost Of Eastside Records, said though the market has changed in the 30-plus years he's been selling records in the Valley, he has a consistent customer base.

"I went to Goodwill and some thrift stores trying to find some, but that's really hit-or-miss", she said. "The acts we've got playing might not be that familiar to the people of Mold but they will be to the people who shop in the store and I hope everyone is intrigued enough to come and have a look". Lo-fi king Mac Demarco has two separate records up for grabs and of course you can't miss indie classics from the likes of Wolf Alice and The Courteeners; they're essentials to any collection and we're not against fighting to get our hands on them!

Vinyl made up 14 percent of all physical album sales previous year, which, clearly, isn't close to sales for CDs - and says nothing about listening via streaming.

Those in Toledo will notice a sidewalk sale starting at 9 a.m.in front of Culture Clash records on Secor Road, which features CDs and 45s before the store opens at 10 a.m.

"We let them decide because they're the ones that have to bring it in the store", Colliton said.

"There was a good lineup before we opened and it's been pretty busy ever since", Kemshed said.

When asked about the economic impact of Record Store Day, Albanese is clear that the event's importance goes further than just one day. To cap off the day, Dharmasoul will perform a family friendly in-store show at 6 p.m. Lupton says he is particularly excited about records from Celtic Frost, Doris Nortion, and the Cure.

Kemshed said some people have expressed interest in buying whatever vinyl inventory is left after the store closes. As always, everything is limited, and not everything will be available at every store, but... Anything that gets people into record bars and browsing through records and discovering new music, rediscovering old music and feeling what it feels like, not just downloading or streaming, I think it's a very big part of it.
