Masterful Reed answers major question, top-5 or not

He had stood in there against McIlroy, on the day when Rory McIlroy was trying to become only the sixth golfer in history to win a career Grand Slam.

But once again McIlroy's putter cooled off and he fell flat when it mattered most.

"A slippery two-putt for the green jacket", Nick Faldo, who won the thing three times, said on CBS. He failed to get up-and-down from a bunker on the par-5 second as McIlroy had a 4-foot eagle putt to tie for the lead.

A delight Jordan Miller said that after 10,000 retweets it came to the attention of Herman who got her boyfriend to help out.

"I just didn't quite have it", he confessed.

"Who else tied for 32nd?" You go to a Ryder Cup and you feel like you have a whole nation on your back. "It's hard to take any positives from it right now, but at least I put myself in the position".

Maybe that's why when he turned on the television Sunday morning with a three-shot lead, he heard plenty of flattering observations about his game without anyone thinking he was going to win. Reed had played 12 rounds at Augusta National without ever breaking 70, and only two of those rounds were under par. He said he couldn't wait to tee it up in the final group. He's still waiting to celebrate his first major title win.

It turned out to be no fun for McIlroy.

Reed's first PGA win back in 2013 signed his ticket to play in his first major which was the Masters, and then his first major win ended up being here as well. Even today, I didn't stray from it at all throughout the entire day. "Just be you. Play golf".

The hero of the 2016 Ryder Cup took some mighty blows from Augusta National Golf Club but never went down - he is Captain America, after all - and now has a green jacket to drape over his red, white and blue cape.

Charley Hoffman's final-round, 5-under 67 posted him into a T12 at the Masters and moved him from 22nd to 15th in the latest standings.

Reed did, though, swat aside the notion of him being an unpopular victor.

"Yeah, it's going to hurt, but I try and look at the things -- kind of more the glass half-full", the world number eight told reporters.

And when the putts don't fall on the final day, there's not a lot of excuses that can be made.

"It was huge", he said.

"I saw Jordan and Rickie storm up those leaderboards. So, I need to get my game sharp". "Not that I have anything against Patrick". "It just shows that we have the facilities here at Augusta University to produce great players".

"It's just a matter of him focusing a little better and getting his mind more set on what he wants to do instead of racing ahead and thinking of winning the tournament", his swing coach, Butch Harmon, said.

It won't destroy his career because McIlroy is way too talented to allow that.

"I'm just happy to be up here and be able to say I've gotten over that hump of not winning at all last year, coming into a year that one of my biggest goals was to win a major and compete", Reed said. He pulled off two dazzling shots to give himself a shot at saving par. I don't necessarily see him as someone that backs up and will let you come back into the tournament. It eventually wasn't enough, though, leaving the 29-year-old in second spot; he's now finished as a runner-up in three of the four major events and third in the other.
