"Tomb Raider" is instead full of characters like the island boss played by Walton Goggins, who guns down slave-workers digging through island pits when he's not staring at something, apparently off-camera, for some reason. She's meant to inherit a large fortune from her father (Dominic West) in the event of his death, which is presumed after seven years missing.
"When Mondo asked me to do a poster for the new TOMB RAIDER movie, I got very excited!" Since her childhood, he has lovingly called his daughter "Sprout" but has jetted off to parts unknown, keeping his intentions secret from her and leaving her to fend for herself for long stretches of time.
What I do admire is that the movie is not too shy on action scenes despite the film dragging on a bit with lots of boring dialogue scenes.
Working from a screenplay by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons, director Roar Uthaug ("The Wave") delivers a state-of-the-art popcorn flick that's at its best when the focus is on the spunky Lara rather than the special effects. It's so similar that you half expect Marcus Brody to pop up.

'She can go to Croft Manor if she wants to, but she doesn't use it'. For some reason - maybe it's a outcome of staring for so long at the smooth, dead-eyed faces of Don, Eric, Ivanka, and Jared - I found her ridiculous insistence on living by her wits and on her merits as worthy of a standing ovation. But can she take the lead?
By the time we reach Himiko's tomb, we realize the writers have "chosen poorly". Despite its meager virtues, it never really rises above the baseline "meh" that marks most studio-made action movies.
For those looking for more Tomb Raider-esque movies I recommend the Indiana Jones movies, the Brendan Fraser Mummy franchise, Sahara, and the National Treasure movies.
The Tomb Raider site also teases a puzzle for players to solve, which will be released at 9 am PDT on Monday next week. When she discovers the key to his hidden workroom, she becomes hooked on his quest and decides to follow his trail all the way to the jungle tomb he was desperately trying to keep from ever being opened.
There is no love interest, no obligatory hook-up that "makes her desirable", instead we get what we really wanted, a butt-kicking heroine who is just starting out on an fantastic journey, which I personally hope Warner Bros.is smart enough to continue. Maybe he just abandoned her? It's just completely unremarkable in nearly every way, from its bland, largely nonsensical storytelling to the smaller-name supporting cast surrounding the rather appealing Vikander. Here's hoping the next one creates more than imitates. Really no one believed that kiss with Elsa in The Last Crusade, did they? And what would audiences find in return?
