Germany claim shock ice hockey victory over Canada

Canadian defenseman Jocelyne Larocque apologized Friday for taking off her silver medal nearly immediately after it was placed around her neck at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

Unlike Larocque, though, Makarov was able to escape a lot of fanfare in 1980 for the way he reacted to the United States' iconic win over he and his heavily favored Russian teammates. "What more can you say?"

In perhaps the biggest blow of all, the men's ice hockey team didn't even make it to the final courtesy of a stunning 4-3 loss to Germany on Friday night (Saturday NZ Time) in the semifinals.

For the first time in 20 years, the United States women's hockey team can call themselves Olympic champions after beating Canada 3-2 in a shootout final. The best previous finish by a USA men's or women's team was a bronze in 2006.

"That's who we are", John Landsteiner said. "We all knew she had it".

"We're going to have some fun and put on a show, and may the best team win".

The first shootout in an Olympic women's final. The key shot from the Canadians was trying to sneak past a USA guard stone and instead nudged it by maybe a quarter-inch, enough to alter its course. The weight was good and we're in the top button. Kevin Poulin made 11 saves on 15 shots for Canada.

Senior Goalie Abbey Miller of Anoka, Minnesota tells NewsChannel 9, "Some of them were a little bitter this morning, so it was kind of fun to mess with them, but we have to try to keep it too a minimum because they actually do get kind of mad". It came after more than a year of efforts by the team to secure higher wages and greater support from the governing body.

Making the most of several Canadian missteps and penalties, Germany built a 4-1 lead through the first two periods only to face a withering comeback in the third as Canada scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the period.

Bradie Tennell, Mirai Nagasu and Karen Chen finished in 9th, 10th and 11th places, respectively.

Jocelyne Larocque is sorry for yanking off her silver medal.

Just as remarkable was the loss for Canada, which has won the gold in men's curling at the last three Winter Olympics.

"I wouldn't take away my experience from the last two silver medals", Knight said, according to NBC. "We forget that sport is war because participation trophies and the like have inured us to the reality of athletic endeavor".

Second and third goalies Sorokin and Shestyorkin could in the National Hockey League soon, but they're definitely lower on the depth chart than Koshechkin, who has earned the right to be Russia's No. 1 as one of the rare players not from SKA or CSKA.
