Drought about to end: Russians 1-2 after short program

In between Lutzes and toe loops, you may have noticed an unusual mark on the inside of US figure skater Mirai Nagasu's leg during her skating performances.

Those were the ups. This competition is typically the qualifier when it is a Winter Olympic season, however the committee who selects the US team favored Ashely Wagner, who came in fourth at the championships that year, because they felt she had a more consistent season. She back loads her jumps to the second half of her programs, which earns her more points.

But where Nagasu really shone was after her program, during several interviews about the fall.

Then there are the novice and junior skaters that are pushing the boundaries of what's possible - phenoms such as Alysa Liu, the talented and precocious 12-year-old from the Bay Area who won the junior USA title in San Jose, California, as the youngest skater in the field.

All three US women intend to skate on. That set the stage for an Olympic showdown, and with the Russian team having no gold medal so far, the spotlight was even more glaring for them.

"She is extremely fit".

Nagasu finished ninth, with her U.S. team-mates right behind after Karen Chan and Bradie Tennell both had bumps of their own. She practiced the jump during training runs, although she didn't put any triple axels into her program at the time. The two-time Olympian received lots of attention for her team free skate program, where she became the first American woman in history to land a triple axel at the Olympics.
