Mourinho Explains Why Pogba Was Dropped Again

During Pogba's sub-par run lately, his defensive abilities and mindset have been called into question, so it's hardly a surprise Mourinho was thorough in his pre-sub briefing.

Mourinho also explained why he chose to start with the former Athletic Bilbao and McTominay ahead of Pogba against Sevilla.

"I went to the press conference and the questions were about Paul and I think the question should be about the kid". "That's a bit unusual".

Pogba has been left out of three of the last five Manchester United starting lineups, with Mourinho's side losing the the two games that the 24-year-old has started.

"He looked a senior player, a player with great maturity, with tactical sense, with a sense of responsibility, good in possession, good in pressing".

As the first half came to an end, Sevilla did have a change of their own as Ever Banega played in Joaquin Correa, but the midfielder saw his shot saved by De Gea.

The French star played his part in a typically cautious, backs-to-the-wall away European performance from Mourinho's side.

He then went to to describe Pogba's performance, saying: "Paul tried to give the team what I asked".

"He gave us stability".

The France global has endured a hard few weeks at United, stemming from a below-par performance in the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham on January 31.

The Portuguese, however, pointed to the steely display of 21-year-old Scott McTominay, who was making his eighth competitive start for United and only his second in the Champions League.

Instead it was left to De Gea to ensure his side came away from Spain with a positive result.

"Now we have proof he was not 100 percent fit". The game was even.

Pogba's update seemed to reveal that he couldn't quite understand Mourinho's thinking behind his team selection. We take a look.

Vincenzo Montella also spoke to the press after the game (via Marca), here is what he had to say: " We created a lot of good chances and we deserved to score a few. "I think all round he is the full package".
