Vonn has broken the record for oldest female medallist in Alpine skiing at the Winter Olympics, previously held by Austria's Michaela Dorfmeister, victor of he Turin 2006 super-G aged 32 years and 332 days. She has has three Olympic medals - a gold in the downhill in 2010, a bronze in the Super-G in 2010 and now the bronze in the 2018 downhill.
"An emotional day all around because this is probably my last Olympic downhill", Vonn said. He died in November, and Vonn paid tribute to him by wearing his initials on her helmet. "If you think what's happened over the last eight years and what I've been through to get here, I gave it all".
Vonn started to cry even more when asked why she has deemed this her last downhill race.
"Some of the lines I took (Tuesday) I think were faster, others not", Vonn said course-side, before going to analyze her run on video. "I never in my wildest dreams thought I could do so well in such a big event. It hurts me when people say that because it's just not true". I tried so hard. Unfortunately, those tears seem very real. She's also a snowboarder, and that was supposed to be her best chance for a medal.
As it turned out, she was just finding her rhythm.
As she stood up to leave, she casually picked up her gold medal and draped it around her neck.
Lindsey Vonn will compete in the final Olympic event of her glittering career when she takes part in the alpine combined event on Wednesday night. It's been fun. It's been a fun ride and I hope tomorrow I can maybe pull something out of the hat. "This is my last downhill".
"I struggled to try to keep the emotions together, but I left it all on the mountain like I said I would. Of course, I'd have loved a gold medal but, honestly, this is fantastic and I'm so proud". "But I still think he is watching and I think he'd still be proud of me".
"I'm really proud to walk away with a medal".
A source with knowledge of Vonn's thinking said that her use of such language was no accident. After tearing ligaments in her right knee and fracturing her tibia at the World Championships, she reinjured the same joint and partially tore her ACL right before the 2014 Olympics. I want to represent our country well. It's made me a stronger person and it also makes you appreciate every opportunity that you have.
"The crashes, the comebacks from the injuries, she's an incredible fighter", added Knight. "No. 1 is always really hard, especially in Super-G", Vonn told NBC of her starting position, according to USA Today. I'm just counting on some medical miracles to extend my career a bit longer. "Is this what we've become?" ESPN commentator Julie Foudy posted about the trolling. I love what I do. I'd actually rather them avoid making political statements altogether, here or there. Their loss I guess.
So when Vonn failed to medal (whether or not that would be required for a White House invitation), Trump's supporters took that as motivation for mockery. They don't judge. They're just there to love you. "I can hook you up with the right doctor". "I know he is, too". "I haven't changed my mind". But that's fine. I'm not going to do that. "But you know I'm here and I'm on the Olympic podium again". But as Foudy says, while Vonn may be the target, this mentality is a threat to us all.
