Death Toll From Flu Season Jumps in California

After a Hopkins County Board of Health meeting on Wednesday, health department Director Denise Beach urged the public to be vaccinated for the flu, especially if they fall into groups at high risk of having serious flu-related complication, such as children under 5, the elderly, or pregnant women. Confirmed child flu cases at CHOA hospitals have more than doubled over the past few weeks from an average of 12 percent to 28 percent.

Fifteen more flu related deaths in California were reported by state health officials Friday, as outbreaks and hospitalizations continued at elevated levels compared to prior years.

Flu season is well on its way to peaking early.

It's unclear, yet, if that type of severity will appear here, Jernigan said.

A Department for Health and Social Care spokeswoman said: "Vaccines are the best protection we have against flu".

On Thursday, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey declared a statewide public health emergency to help hospitals that are filled to capacity with flu patients. Sanford Health in Bismarck is floating a similar measure, which it enforced past year.

As of January 6 there were 2,877 flu cases in Nebraska. Over the holidays, kids are home from school spending time with their families and friends. They showed that when a vaccine is considered effective, 1.2 percent of vaccinated people had the flu, while 3.9 percent of unvaccinated people had the flu.

It's not the worst flu season in the past decade, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shared during a press conference Friday morning.

A person receives the seasonal influenza vaccine (flu shot).

That makes some sense, says Goldman, because that was another season where the prevalent strain of flu was due to the H3N2 virus.

People with flu symptoms should seek medical advice.

Safranek said a vaccine for people with egg allergies, called Flublok seems to be more effective this year. However, people who are seeking treatment at hospitals are not subject to the restriction.

So far, 20 children have died from the flu in the US this season, compared to a total of 101 last season. People infected with the flu may have respiratory symptoms without a fever.

"A lot of people take supplements orally - they'll take vitamin C orally or magnesium orally but you don't absorb as much of it as you do when you get it intravenously", said Tapp.

If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities.
