What defensive breakdowns happened for 49ers on Cardinals' OT drive?

The 49ers would have 13 penalties for 113 yards, including the penalty that set up the game winning touchdown for Arizona. Palmer's 19-yard touchdown pass to Larry Fitzgerald with 37 seconds left in overtime was the only touchdown in the game. San Francisco's only three sacks came in Week 2 against Seattle's suspect line, and the 49ers have generated just 17 quarterback pressures the other two games.

San Francisco took advantage of Arizona's injury-depleted line, sacking Palmer six times while spending most of the afternoon in his face. First, Palmer was picked off in the end zone on 3rd-and-goal at the 4.

That was the good news. The same can be said on the other side of the ball. Fitzgerald has already shown an ability to make spectacular catches at times this season, and the combination of Palmer and Fitzgerald can still pose a threat to an Eagles secondary that has been bit by some big plays through the air in recent weeks.

Despite last week's loss to the Rams, a San Francisco offense that had been left for dead took a big leap forward, scoring 39 points and racking up 421 yards. The Cardinals capitalized on the takeaway - only the third forced by the defense this season - with Dawson kicking a game-tying 43-yard field goal at the 1:24 mark of the period.

But the defense couldn't get the last stop when it needed it most on the final drive. San Francisco will battle and keep it close, but Arizona will ultimately have a play or two that puts them ahead for good. Tank Carradine has been placed on the IR, thrusting Thomas into the starting lineup against a Cardinals offensive line struggling to find an identity.

It was the third time this season that Hoyer, who finished with 8.66 FanDuel points, didn't crack double digits. "I think sometimes if you get desperate, you could play worse", 49ers quarterback Brian Hoyer said.

His 19-yard catch was the only touchdown of the game for either team and the 106th of his National Football League career. "We passionately want what is best for this country and all its citizens", it added. As players, coaches, ownership and staff, we are privileged to work in an environment that is a tremendous example of how people can come together for a common goal.

"Consciously I knew we had just won the game but I couldn't breathe", Fitzgerald said. It is one thing if you get blown out, you say we never had a chance to win. Okay, probably not, considering they are only two years removed from their NFC Championship appearance, but the NFL is a "what have you done for me lately?" league.

The road doesn't get any easier for the 49ers.

If he passes for at least 300 yards, it will be the fifth time in his career he has done so in three consecutive games, the fourth time as a member of the Cardinals. Hoyer would have had a touchdown pass had a penalty not have gone against San Francisco. At what age in their life does the thought process change to where we get to where we are as adults? "If I thought we were lacking effort in anything, it would be different".

"I told our guys on Friday that this was the game I wanted to see", he explained to reporters after the win. "The more you get angry, the more you get upset, it's going to affect the way you play".
