Nitish Kumar Wins Confidence Vote in Bihar Assembly

The Raj Bhavan here echoed with chants of "Nitish Kumar Zindabad" as Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi administered the oath to Nitish Kumar.

Soon after Kumar's resignation as chief minister last night, Narendra Modi took to his Twitter account and congratulated Kumar for joining the fight against corruption.

The JD (U)'s 71 MLAs and the BJP's 53, gave the alliance a support of 124 legislators in the 243-member assembly.

Nitish Kumar moves confidence motion in Bihar Assembly. And given that JD (U) shared a good working relationship with BJP during their earlier tie-up, dissolving the mahagathbandhan became a beneficial prospect for Nitish.

"The people of Bihar had given a mandate against the BJP, but, now he (Nitish) has formed the government along with the BJP. Truth is that "hunger for power has overpowered" everything else", said Congress spokesperson Randeep singh Surjewala. He parted ways with RJD and pulled out from Grand Alliance over alleged corruption charges on former deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav in connection with land-for-hotels case.

The governor has asked Kumar to prove his majority on the floor of the House on Friday. This government will work and serve the people of Bihar. He also threatened of protests across the state against Kumar "who will find it hard to move around".

By distancing himself from the Yadav clan and the corruption charges levelled against it, Kumar has projected himself as a man of principles.

"Modi's road to power in 2019 is smoother with Nitish on his side", said Mr Sankarshan Thakur, an editor at The Telegraph newspaper and the author of a book on Mr Kumar.

"Everything was fixed", Lalu Prasasd said, adding, "He is a very big opportunist". "Nitish Kumar has cheated the people of Bihar".

No other member from either the JD (U) or the BJP was sworn in.

For the BJP, wresting yet another important state where the Congress was a partner in government, albeit a junior one, is yet another victory, bringing it another step closer to its dream of a "Congress-mukt Bharat". The alliance with NDA has strengthened JD (U) in Bihar and has increased its influence even in national politics. Deftly, PM Modi and BJP President Amit Shah choked him politically and compelled him to strike a compromise with them. "This is a black day indeed for Indian democracy", the Congress leader said. Senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi took oath as the deputy chief minister.

The trust vote was necessitated after Nitish resigned as Chief Minister on Thursday, only to form another Government with the help of NDA, barely hours after quitting as leader of the Grand Alliance.

Sushil Modi has already replaced RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav as Deputy Chief Minister, however his brother Tej Pratap was also a key cabinet minister with the hold of health and environment departments.

My point is simple, if I say that any politician is honest or incorruptible then I am telling a blatant lie.

He further said that his government will show a mirror to RJD.

"RJD, with its 88 seats in the state Assembly, is the largest party in the state".
