Audi A8 Will Be Done With Buttons & Switches


Showing the new Audi A8 luxury sedan in all of its technological glory in the movie does nothing short of skyrocket public interest in the vehicle.

Audi says it's the first vehicle to reach Level 3 autonomous drive - ahead of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and, yes, ahead of the Tesla Model S as well. Its prime competitor, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, is an absolute powerhouse of luxury, so many fans and enthusiasts felt that the new 7 Series was a bit too lukewarm to compete with the white-hot Benz.

The 2017 Audi A8 made its blink-and-you'll-miss it debut in the new Spider-Man film.

Of course, the rear seats remain the classiest and most comfortable, especially in the A8 L. The latter has an optional relaxation seat that comes with four different adjustment options and a footrest that can warm and massage the soles of your feet.

An S8 has been confirmed and will use a 4.0-litre turbocharged V8.

Performance, alas, is not the name of the game this time. As you move to the rear, the new A8 looks modern and clean with styling that is obviously inspired by the Prologue concept. Right off the bat, every single A8 will be a mild hybrid, which means each includes a 48-volt electric system enabling stop/start operation of the gasoline (or diesel) engine when stopped and turning off the engine when the vehicle is coasting (and then back on again when the accelerator pedal is pushed). Alone this is claimed to improve fuel consumption by 2.5mpg.

The interiors feature a horizontally laid out dashboard with a 10.1-inch touchscreen display placed in the center.

However, the best part of the new A8 is the light animation. This essentially lets the driver relax while the auto battles out the maneuvers to be made during this process. It will also reduce both body roll in corners and pitch during acceleration and braking, depending on the route. Though, at least for the MMI display, Audi features a lot of its controls in the digital gauge cluster, which is controllable with the steering wheel, so that should help.

In terms of mechanical details, the major switch for the A8 is the presence of electrification across the entire range. Utilising Audi's Piloted Drive software it will allow - where legislation permits - for fully autonomous driving of up to 37mph and Level 3 "continual automation" autonomy. "Artificial Intelligence" AI traffic jam assist takes over in slow-moving traffic which, says Audi, allows the driver to watch the in-car TV. Furthermore, another petrol and a petrol-hybrid will soon join the bandwagon with the yet to be released S8 and e-Tron versions.

The model will be launched with two extensively reengineered V6 turbo engines, a 3.0 TDI and a 3.0 TFSI.

A plug-in hybrid version of the A8 mated to a 3.0-liter V-6 gasoline engine will provide 31 miles (50 km) of pure electric driving, Audi said. Two eight-cylinder versions - a 4.0 TDI with 435 hp and a 4.0 TFSI with 460 hp- will follow slightly later. The new A8 will arrive in the United States in next spring or summer as a 2019 model.

The marque's flagship model will boast new levels of touchscreen operation and drivetrain electrification, with further autonomous driving innovations to be added next year.

With the new A8's retail price up nearly 8 percent on its predecessor at 90,600 euros ($103,000), Audi will also struggle to narrow the gap with its traditional rivals, research firm IHS Markit said.
