Mexico soccer coach Osorio banned from Gold Cup for insults

Guzan appeared in his seventh-consecutive Gold Cup match, recording seven saves. Save for Kelyn Rowe, none of the USA midfielders could generate chances with any sort of regularity, and simply keeping possession proved hard against Panama's central midfield pairing of Anibal Godoy and Gabriel Gomez.

The U.S. had just played in its first World Cup in 40 years, winning a berth made possible by Mexico's suspension after using an overage player in Olympic qualifying, and was three months into former Mexico boss Bora Milutinovic's U.S. reign.

Osorio was incensed when his team was not awarded a penalty against Portugal.

"It was good enough for three points and at the end of the day, that's what matters", said head coach Octavio Zambrano. Osorio was ordered to leave the touchline by the referee.

Did anyone figure Jamaica would make the championship match two years ago?

"If we can get some success in NY, it will provide us a good platform to get as many points out of the last two group games as possible".

"We're at a time when we have to give certain players a break", Arena said.

The second games for Group A will be played at Houston's BBVA Compass Stadium.

Mexico and the United States have won 12 of the 13 Gold Cups since 1991.

"To play in Canada's first-ever Gold Cup home game, and against a strong team and get a result, was something that was very exciting for me".

Victory was sealed in some style in the second half as Steeven Langil scored a superb individual goal only a minute after coming off the substitute bench. Dwyer, who is the husband of the USA women's team forward Sydney Leroux, ran onto a cross from Kelyn Rowe after a throw-in by Jorge Villafana. And with the toughest game of the group stage against Panama being played first, it's hard not to see the USA doing well at this edition of the Gold Cup. The match should not be easy for the Islanders but it is a game that they can win against an unimpressive Nicaragua team. "To have my family there [from Victoria] and able to watch it live made it that much more special". They are now in very good shape in World Cup Qualifying - their only loss has come against Mexico.

With his 50th minute strike, Dom Dwyer became just the ninth player in U.S. MNT history to score in each of his first two appearances. We seem to have played them a lot in recent years, and every single game has been different. Despite getting just 10 touches in the first half, Dwyer was able to score a true poacher's goal, an instinctual swipe that beat the Panama keeper to give the US a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute.

Mexico was accused of overlooking the US, but the every-two-days schedule favored the Americans, who were fit and strong physically.

Both teams return to action Tuesday in Tampa, with Panama facing Nicaragua in the first game of the doubleheader and the USMNT taking on Martinique in the nightcap.
